China Tomorrow--Build Innovation Link Between China and UK
As innovation is a key driver of future prosperity and is at the heart of future economic development, China Tomorrow therefore held an event, supported by Yorkshire Forward, in Leeds Business School on THURSDAY, 12TH NOVEMBER 2009 so as to help build innovation links between the UK & China. Dr. Yu Xiong, the vice chairman of China Innovation and Development Association, was invited as one of keynote speakers to provide an informed perspective of the situation ‘on the ground’ in China and details of the opportunities for UK organisations in their respective areas.
Dr. Yu Xiong gave a presentation on the topic of “Innovation, Commercialisation and Funding: the Chinese Model”. He introduced China’s future innovation policy, 2006-2020 science and technology programme, together with the models of innovation commercialisation in china. TEDA, one of sponsors of China UK Entrepreneurship Competition, was introduced by him as a case study of successful funding model. “China is ready to transit towards an ‘innovation-orientated society’ from ‘imitation to independent innovation’,” Dr Yu Xiong said, “there are massive opportunities for building new partnership platform between the UK and China, furthermore, Chinese enterprises are so keen to go international.”

A group of senior government officials and academics from China were invited by China Tomorrow to present in the session of innovation and technology transfer landscape in China. They outlined the opportunities to develop collaborations with companies and academic and research institutions at the regional level in China, and provide examples of how organisations in China have worked with counterparts in the UK on joint research or knowledge transfer projects.
Other speakers presented a comprehensive list of topics around IPR considerations, Best practice for collaborative working and the cross-cultural issues of collaboration, and the Case study of Bradford China Science Bridges.
Following the announcement at the UK-China Business Summit with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, the main aim of the China Tomorrow initiative is to better equip organisations in the UK and China to work together on a wide range of innovation & technology projects and to commercialise the outputs.
